Leadership Development Starts with Alignment: How Great Leaders Builds Trust, Initiative, and Results
Leaders,
As an executive leadership coach, I’ve seen firsthand how well-intentioned advice can derail strong teams. One of the most common?
“Hire great people and get out of their way.”
Autonomy matters. But in my executive coaching practice, I’ve learned that autonomy without alignment creates confusion, not performance.
Real leadership development begins with alignment.
When leaders focus on developing trust through clarity — not control — their teams gain confidence. When they define decision ownership, they accelerate developing initiative. And when they consistently communicate strategy, they create momentum.
Here’s what I teach my clients:
1. Alignment Before Autonomy: Freedom without direction scatters energy. Clarity compounds it.
2. Paired Leadership Builds Trust: Occasionally working alongside your team strengthens context, decision-making, and accountability. This isn’t micromanagement — it’s developing trust.
3. Clarify Decision Ownership: Define which decisions are:
- Theirs to own
- Theirs to inform
- Ours to discuss
- Ours to decide together
Establishing clear boundaries helps fuel the development of Trust, Initiative and a Bias for Action among your teammates.
4. Over-Communicate Strategically: Send regular updates explaining what you did and why. Alignment is the leader’s responsibility.
Throughout my executive coaching experiences, I’ve watched leaders who practice these habits create a Culture of Trust, Initiative, and Bias for Action. Their teams move faster — because they move together.
So yes, hire great people.
But don’t disappear.
Align deeply. Develop intentionally. Lead well.
Food for thought, Leaders.
Have a Great Day, and as always...
Go Forth & Lead Well!
Semper Fidelis,
Mike
