Give them the first word, and youโ€™ll earn their best work." At the bottom is the Fidelis Leadership Group logoโ€”a torch within a circleโ€”and the tagline, "Developing World Class Leaders."

Leaders,
A weekly one-on-one is more than just a check-in. It’s one of your most powerful tools for alignment, motivation, and meaningful leadership… if done right.

Too often, leaders dominate these conversations. But the most impactful one-on-ones are driven by the team member, not the leader. When your people lead the conversation, they gain clarity, confidence, and ownership. And you gain insight into what truly matters to them.

Here’s how you make every one-on-one count:

Let Them Lead

Start by making space. Your direct report should come prepared with questions, concerns, or areas where they’re stuck. This builds self-awareness and problem-solving muscles. Give them the first 10 minutes. Let their voice shape the conversation before yours enters the scene.

Your Turn Comes Second

The next 10 minutes are yours. Share feedback, observations, and raise any issues or opportunities on your radar. Because you listened first, your insights will land better and your feedback will feel more collaborative, not corrective.

End With Forward Focus

Use the final 10 minutes to align on goals and priorities. What’s most important this week? Where should time and energy be spent? This turns the one-on-one into a strategy session, not just a status update.

Bonus Moments:

โ— Celebrate wins. Recognize achievements, big or small.
โ— Check in personally. People are more than their roles.
โ— Talk about talent. Who’s thriving? Who’s struggling? Who needs encouragement or a push?

The Result

Alignment gets sharper. Accountability grows. Relationships deepen. Weekly one-on-ones become a cornerstone of your leadership, not just another meeting on the calendar.

When you shift from “talking to” your team to “listening with” them, everything changes. Give them the first word, and you’ll earn their best work.

Leadership Lessons:

โ— The best one-on-ones are for the team member, not the leader.
โ— Let them speak first, so you can lead better.
โ— Consistency creates clarity, trust, and performance.

Make your next one-on-one count by letting go of control and leaning into connection.

Food for thought, Leaders.

Have a Great Day, and as always…

Go Forth & Lead Well!

Semper Fidelis,
Mike
